Judith Wright: Contents page

Judith Wright (1915–2000) was born into a pastoralist family at Thalgarrah near Armidale in Northern New South Wales, and educated by correspondence and at New England Girls’ School and the University of Sydney. She visited Europe before the Second World War and settled in Sydney and later in Queensland. She was a feminist from an early age. Her first book was The Moving Image (1946), which placed her firmly among the brilliant generation of 1940s poets. In the last decade of her life she put aside poetry to concentrate her energies on conservation, peace and Aboriginal issues, which had been life-long interests. Along with Slessor and Webb she is regarded as one of Australia’s major poets.
