Peter Skrzynecki (b.1945) is of Polish/ Ukrainian background and was born in Germany, shortly before the end of World War II. He emigrated to Australia in 1949 with his parents. He studied as an external student at the University of New England, and went on to a Master of Arts from the University of Sydney in 1984 and a Master of Letters from the University of New England in 1986. His first book was There, Behind the Lids (1970) published by Roland Robinson with his Lyre-bird Writers Press. He has gone on to publish numerous books and has won several literary prizes, including the Grace Leven Poetry Prize and the Henry Lawson Short Story Award. He received an Order of Cultural Merit from the Polish Government in 1989 and an Order of Australia in 2002. His poetry volumes include titles Easter Sunday (1993), Immigrant Chronicle (UQP 1975), and Night Swim (1989). He has also published two short story collections and two novels, the most recent being The Cry of the Goldfinch (1996), and has edited three anthologies of contemporary Australian writing. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Western Sydney, Macarthur.
