John Jenkins (b. 1949) was born in the bayside Melbourne suburb of Elwood. His parents were specialty tailors who had a small shop. He left school at 14, then had a number of short-lived jobs before returning to study. He read at Melbourne’s famous La Mama theatre, and in the 1970s helped to write pop songs with various musicians. His first book of poems was Zone of the White Wolf (1974). He lived in Sydney and Melbourne, travelled widely overseas, and in 1995 moved to the country outside Melbourne. He has co-written seven books of poems with Ken Bolton including their verse novel, The Ferrara Poems, which was made into a 40-minute film.
